that will be fine. an alternative is to unscrew the sandwhich plate altogether, then unwind the threaded section in the middle, replace with a shorter 8v non oil cooler version, then fit the oil filter to the block direct.
Make sure you plug the holes well, as when the stat opens the oil will come out under pressure and squirt every where.
I suppose you don't know the thread types on the sandwich plate? If you do you could bridge the two holes together.
as the man said unbolt the sandwich plate by undoing either the bolt 24mm spanner or the 10mm allen inside the threads if you know what i mean then get a non oil cooled threaded section and screw the filter direct to the block
