Right then, where shall I start?
Further to my thread a couple of weeks ago about my ticking ecotec engine, it went in on Wednesday to have the exhaust manifold gasket replaced to rid it of the annoying ticky tick tick it's had since I bought it that I just thought was lifters.
Phoned them yesterday to find out what was going on, and Gerry (the manager) wasn't there, but one of the other lads told me the reason the exhaust was blowing. Two studs were snapped off and the manifold gasket has disintegrated.
Went to the Garage this morning on the way to work, and had a look at my Cav. The two studs nearest the timing belt are indeed snapped off inside the head. They've been like this for quite some time, as the ends of the studs are rusty and there is a lot of soot around where the gasket was missing. The rest of the face where the manifold connects to the head was nice and shiny.
The head is going to come off, which, thinking about it, I think is a good idea, because it can go in a jig for the studs to be drilled out. I can think of nothing worse than slipping with the drill while drilling them out with it in situ.
Gerry thinks the manifold is actually ok and not warped, but it will be checked before it goes back on. It's certainly not cracked anyway.
I'm trying to look on the positive side, telling myself that at least the Head Gasket will be done now, so it shouldn't need doing again for a long long time. Also my rocker cover gasket has been leaking for a while, so that can be sorted at the same time.
Cam belt, rollers and tensioner was done a week or so ago, so in theory my engine should now be pretty reliable for a while!
The bad news is it's gonna cost ........wait for it........£380!!!!
Well, more like £350 if the head doesn't need to be skimmed.
Once you take £60 + VAT for the Gasket Kit, and the initial £50 or so it was going to cost to change the manifold gasket anyway, I suppose it's not too bad.
It's only money after all, you can't take it with you........
So, anyone out there with a tappy Ecotec....my advice to you is put up with it, it's cheaper!!!
PS. This is apparently quite a common problem with the Ecotec engine, so don't discount this when you think you've got noisy tappets, as the initial symptoms (to the untrained ear) are quite similar.
