I've owned this car for 11 years and have grown really attached to it. It has a performance problem that I'm too stubborn to give up on and hopefully you'll give me some good advice here
The problem is the car is generally flat although it perks up a little above ~3000rpm.
Sometimes, if I don't drive it for a whole weekend AND if it's a little damp (not wet) then I might find it performs well for about 1/2 hour then it's back to being flat.
In any case, the car's top end is good, just that it takes a long while getting there!!
The problem has been present for about 6 years now, oh, and it appears to run a little hot - new rad every 2 years(ish).
Incidentally, along the way I've changed the head gasket, rings, plugs, filter, cam followers etc. due to mileage/servicing etc. (no change at all).
Today I found a good G-reg 1.6SV at the scrap yard. I bought the carb (the dizzy has already gone). Stripped, cleaned & fitted it and found a slight improvement - I'm happy to accept that there could be more than one fault on the car.
Personally I suspect the ignition system - this SV has a vacuum & temp sensor for the ignition (both replaced) and also I've replaced the ignition control box. After replacing the ignition control box it appeared to run a whole lot better for a few days - odd? Strobe checking the timing (with the advance/retard plug removed) all looks fine. With the plug fitted I can see the timing advance with rev's so it looks like something's working!
What strikes me as suspicious is that every SV dizzy at the scrappy has already gone - am I missing something everyone else already knows?!
Any help/advice/experience VERY appreciated.
