I've noclue when it come to any matter mechanical! My Astra Sport 2.0i 16valve is very noisy. There is a tapping/ticking noise coming from the engine on acceleration. It can also be heard when idling at about 2000 revs. It is worse when the engine is cold and gets better but can still be heard faintly. I've changed the oil still no better. Some people are telling me tappets, some are telling me injectors and the garage i got it from is saying it is normal for this type of engine to be noisy. Does anyone have any ideas what the prob (if any) may be? All feedback appreciated!!
by the description it may also be big end. worn shells tapping hard till engine gets the oil pressure up. I had the same problem thought it was tappets but it wasnt .
with engine running
go get a long thin metal bar and screwdriver. place the screwdriver ontop of the engine in line with the cam and put your ear against it. and listen. you will hear an array of ticks and knocks. Now do the same again several times working from left to right (one for each valve/tappet). do this for both cams. If a tappet has gone you will be able to hear where the offending tappet/s are. it will sound more like a knock than a well lubricated tick.
do the same with the longer rod along the block (anyplace below cylinder head) if your big end has gone you will hear heavy knocking.
in both cases a little tap on the trottle may be required to make the problem more audible.
if its shells full rebuild of the block will be nessesary. Not wanting to worry you but its best to know what the problem is before trying to fix it.
my mates dad showed me this method and accurately pointed out the exact piston that had worn shells
