FAO andyK 20xe ignition question
I'm still having problems getting my car started...
have got a new ignition module and coil but im still not getting a spark...
have now run proper tests on the circuit and have the following results..
pin 1 rev counter
pin 2 earth... earths fine.
pin 3 ignition live 12.3v with ignition on
pin 4 spark pulse reads 0.15v continuously when engine is cranked.. is this right??
with ignition on it reads 12v on both sides
cranking over it reads 10.3 on the - i didn't read what the + side V was..
are these figures right??
i don't get any rev counter readings on the dash when i crank it over either....
what else could it be???
CHECK CRANK ANGLE SENSOR YOU SHOULD SEE 300 TO 5000 OHMS ALSO CHECK WHILE ENGINE CRANKING FOR AC VOLTS THIS WILL BE BEST CHECKED WITH DIGITAL METER IF YOU SEE THE VOLTAGE CHANGE IT IS A GOOD INDICATION THE CRANK SENSOR IS OK ALSO DO A VOLTAGE DROP TEST ON IGN COIL GO FROM BATT POS WITH ONE LEAD TO COIL POS WITH THE OTHER LEAD AND SEE IF IT SHOWS A VOLTAGE IF ITS MORE THAN .3 OF A VOLT THEIR IS A PROBLEM ALSO CHECK THE SINGLE BLACK PLUG BY THE GEARBOX THE WIRE IS BLACK THIS IS THE IGN FEED TO THE COIL AND ALSO THE FEED TO THE HALL EFFECT ON THE DISSY ALL THESE TESTS SHOULD BE DONE WHILE ENGINE IS CRANKING HOPE THIS IS SOME USE TO YOU
Refresh my memory....
You engine light is on and your getting fuel into the cylinders ? correct ?
The other two things it could be are
a) Broken wire between ecu and ign amp module
Buzz the wire out between the ecu and module.
Could you check your ecu out on someone elses car ?
You could connect a 1.2W bulb across the coil and see if it flashes when cranking.
and as a last resort connect a 1.2W bulb between ign and the wire from the ecu and see if that flashes.
If it's stuck on connect the one end of bulb to ground rather than ign.
Not sure about the voltage readings, that signal from the ecu looks a bit odd.
yes that is correct, the ECU light comes on and the engine is getting fuel to all the cylinders...
i thought the spark signal was a bit odd, i'd thought it'd alternate from 0-? as it needs to go to 0 for the coil to re-charge for the next spark??
i don't think it's the actual wire cos it is showing voltage..
what do you mean by 'buzz the wire out'??
unfortunately i don't know anyone with a 20xe car so can't try a different ECU, unless some kind mig member near christchurch want's to help me out?
im starting to worry it's the ECU, although i'd be suprised as everything else is working, i can check for fault codes e.t.c...
there are none by the way other than 31 crank sensor no voltage, but the engine isn't running so im gonna get that anyway
so i connect a 1.2w bulb up to the spark signal wire and where?
this one really has me stumped..
Because the signal is a pulse your not going to see it with a DVM which is why a bulb is better.
Buzz out the wire means turn the ign off and connect your meter to either end of the wire (one by ecu, one by module) on continuity buzzing setting and make sure it buzzes out.
Connect the other end of the bulb to ground or ignition and see what happens
ahh i see, if the bulb doesn't flash it's probably the ECU or if the continuety test fails then it's the wire...
i'll try that today, and if see what i get...
do you mean connecting the bulb to spark signal and ignition LIVE and seeing what i get, then to earth and see?
Yeah cus i'm not sure which one it should be
