A bit 'target audience' I know, but does anyone know of a replacement carb that would fit on a 1972 1300 Viva? It's got the standard Zenith/ Stromberg one at the moment, and used to run fine, but has now taken to stalling and rough idling now we've reconnected the oil breather hose tothe air filter box. Not knowing much about variable jet carbs (and not being too imptressed with it) I was wondering if there's a Weber or other fixed jet carb that would fit?
Or any other tip would be very helpful!
technically speaking if you coud provide the correct size adapter you could fit any carb.
anyway, my weber list shows 1256cc viva HC, 1971-73 (is that right?) they do a single 34mm choke version - model 34ICH, it replaces the Zenith36IV, the weber part number is 15290.926 and is just under 100 quid brand new.
Many many years ago when I had a Chevette (same engine)- I stuck a Weber 28/36DCD on it (with K&N pancake). This also needed a new manifold as well to convert from side-draught to down-draught.
Later it ended up with a single 40DCOE (+ new manifold) - this later ended up on a Viva
Either of these will need a rolling road session to set up the jets.
Both were way way better them the strommy. However I'm not too sure if either of these are still available.
On the Strommy - have you checked the rubber diaphram for splits? Also check the dashpot (the big black screw on top) to see if these is enough oil in it? - fill to top of the plunger with clean engine oil.
Both of these will affect the running of the engine. If the carb is dead, check out Dellorto's, VX's of acertain age seem to prefere these
Cheers mate, that was the most concise answer ever! I'll get on the phone to BHB Engineering in Southampton and see if they have one. Do you know if we'll need a new air filter housing? Or a nice K&N shiny one?
well i cant say for sure, but its a standard replacement so should be similar dimensions to standard. I bought a k+n filter for my cavalier carb, but the carb kit did come with a bracket to fit the GM air box to it.
