ah right...ill buy you some diesel or something then after i get this project donelmao
if i do turbo an NA diesel can i use custom management to control the fueling to prevent too much smoke?
Signature not as cool as Paul's
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah, dooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo it.![]()

sweetwill be in touch with allard on monday to ask them a few questions
if i manage to get a 300td then i will be happybut ideally i want the 2.0 or even the 2.5 NA

just emailed allard to see what they would recomend

is it worth putting the turbo off 1.7 astra onto my 1.5 corsa? thanks
If you've got an Astra to hand, it would be an idea having the intercooler and pipework off it.

I was gonna put a 1.7 turbo on my 1.5 but my mate reckoned it would cause more lag and i'd be better just turning the boost up on the one ive got.
I was gonna use a spare 1.7 intercooler tho and pipe it up to my 1.5 engine
yer a av got the pipework and intercooler aswell, so would it be better just to turn the boost up or change the turbo then turn the boost up? i want something that good on the juice but quick when you need it![]()
Stay with the 1.5 turbo. They boost fairly high up for diesels anyway.

ok cheers, gonna do the white ring mod tomorrow and turn the pump up, got a boost valve to go on aswell, isit safe to turn the boost up with out a boost gauge? cheers
Yeah, perfectly safe, as there is a valve on the inlet manifold that will release the pressure if it more than 1 bar.
I would put it on your list of things to get in the not-too-distant future though.

For the 15 or 20 quid they cost id get one tbh
moved this guys as really it is an engine and transmission subject.
thought id come across to speak to the TD tuning god that is jack, and all the others who have tried their hand at it, currently got a totally standard isuzi td astra mk3.
now i want to add a 2.8 frontera intercooler to it (front mount) any ideas about the gains id see, and how to go about plumping it all in, turning the boost upto just under a bar, and the fueling also.
also thinking about adding a aftermarket air filter, wheres best add this?
sorry for being a noob, but never messed with a TD before
pic of my engine as of current
air filter on top

First of all... I don't know who's told you this, but I don't like it! lmao
An I/C isn't a bad idea, but only really needed if you're raising the boost. Having said that, I'm using a completely standard I/C (the crappy verticley-mounted one next to the rad) and it's fine.
As a guide figure, mine is making 109bhp and 168ftlbs.
This is a bit of a tough one, because if you look at the route the air takes, it goes like this:
- Airbox (with air filter)
- Airbox on top of inlet manifold (with another filter)
- Pipework to turbo
- Pipework from turbo to I/C
- Pipework from I/C to inlet manifold
It's all a bit of a mess, really, and it's fairly obvious that this engine was never designed to be put in this car. The usual trick is just to remove the filter from the airbox, as it's pretty redundant. If you can get a panel filter that fits in the airbox on top of the manifold, then do that (and tell us what filter it is so I can buy one!)
No problem, best off asking questions if you're insure, otherwise you end up with melted bits and pieces! lmao
A few important bits you need to know:
- Clean filters a happy engine makes. This includes the fuel filter, which is often overlooked. Get it changed, your engine will love you.
- Get a boost gauge. It's a fantastic indication of what your engine is doing, and will help you set it all up correctly.
- Go easy on it until it is fully warmed up. Diesel engines are built to much tighter tolerances than petrol engines, and they don't like being thrashed from cold. If you want your engine to last a while, look after it!
Other than that, you should find that if you look after it, you have a fantastic car with a fantastic torquey and efficient engine.![]()

cheers fella, yes mine too has the standard I/C next to the rad, i just fancied upgrading it, but i dont want to put to much strain on the engine, so im guessing a bar, or just under will be fine. so if i just remove this, and add pipework onto these pipes and mount the intercooler in the front bumper, that will be fine? is there no way or removing these two air boxes and just having one uprated cone filter? maybe the viper? one thats enclosed in a case?
so im going to need a boost gauge & bleed valve, anything else to up boost and fueling? wheres best to put the bleed valve in?
thanks for all the help
its had a big service when my dad owned it, so the fuel filter should be done? ill check the service records (car is currenty off road for mot, all tune the engine after the mot, due to the exhaust smoke increase)
also, i want to clean the engine up, will there be any harm in using AG machine wash and engine gunk, and jet washing it? anything i should cover? im imformed if i just wd40 all the electrical connectors it should be fine, and wd40 them after the jetting, then turning her over
A bar is fine. There is a valve in the inlet manifold that will prevent it from boosting any more, unless you weld a plate over it.
There's no point to having a cone filter, really. I suppose if you sealed around the edge of the airbox on top of the manifold then you could put a cone filter on the end of the hose, but there's not much point.
No harm in using gunk, but I'd recommend a steam clean over a jetwash.![]()
Teeth? LUXURY! When I was a child we ate by putting rocks in our mouth and jumping up and down.
There is a point in running a cone filter it runs alot cooler. Mine came straight off the turbo using the existing metal tube, i cut one of the mounts off and hung it just under the wing. Forget the frontera I/C go for a 2wd cossie I/C all alloy and only a max of 40quid on ebay some even go for 15quid. With safety valve welded up and boost upped your looking at 22psi holding ;o)
I've just fitted a large cone filter [ripspeed Ł26] to my Cavalier 1.7 td and it was well worth fitting, I've noticed a difference in drivability as the turbo seems to spin up quicker so I don't have to change down a gear as much, it also makes a nice hissing sound on boost![]()
I used the pipe from the left side of the top airbox [circled] and fitted it to the metal pipe coming from the turbo inlet [the cavalier pipe is different to yours, I had to cut the 'consertina' section off my rubber pipe so the bore matched that of the metal pipe, yours might be ok] this puts the cone filter down near the holes in the inner wing where the steering rack goes through so it has a supply of cold air to suck up![]()
the next mods on the list are boost gauge, bleed valve, white ring mod and max fuel screw 1/4 turn and in the future a front mounted intercooler
you get some pics up of where the cone filter is now pal, cheers,
also why not use the frontera i/c? because they are like £80?
i also thought about getting a universal I/C pipework kit off ebay for £64, what size will i be needing? 2.5in im guessing
you can use the frontera i/c i was just giving you a cheap option thats just as good. If you want more that 14psi you need to weld the safety valve.
is that on the cossie 2wd intercooler? or the inlet? im only lookin at running just under 1bar, what sort of psi would that be?
I meant welding the valve in the inlet, not sure what psi is in bar as mine only has psi![]()
Also if you were thinking of taking the cat off for extra power it makes no difference as its a filter not a cat. Love to try all this in a nova shell![]()
