I had not considered if the controller could handle the boost pressures

I have told the company what pressure I am trying to run and they did not make any comment about it being wrong for their controller so hopefully it was just faulty and I will get another one that works ok

    Hi,

nice work on the air filter.

1.2 bar is a safe boost pressure?
Does the (original corsa )transmission handle this torque?
    What about the clutch?

Only time will tell if the clutch/transmission can handle the extra power, I've only been driving it for a week with the 1.7TD fitted.

I would not consider it quick but it does drive nice and is an improvement over the 1.5TD (which also had the boost & fuel tweaks).

quite suprised as depending on how much youve turned up the fuelling/ boost with the 1.7 engine you should be happy with the performance.

when i turned my 1.7 up more biased towards speed then economy it pulled like a train so would have thought in a corsa it would be fairly quick
Owns a white Mk3 turbo diesel with more stopping power then engine power..... boosting 0.9bar, Now De-catted!!

Re: Isuzu turbo diesel tuning guide

I'm not unhappy with the performance its just not what I would consider quick, I have a quick car as my toy (0-60 under 6 seconds etc), the corsa is the family hack and the 1.7TD motor is an improvement over the 1.5TD, the torque difference is noticable.

I have got the boost controller back and its set at 1 bar at the minute, when it comes on boost the pressure rises to 1.3 bar and then drops off to 1 bar, I'm not sure why the boost controller does this unless its some sort of initial overboost (if I disconnect the controller and block the pipes the boost goes over 1.5 bar constant).

The fuelling is set so that it does not smoke much, I could crank it up more but don't like leaving a smoke screen behind lmao

I thought my 1.7td was quite quick had 1.7bar, wouldnt mind doing a corsa with one. Have you welded the safety valve up?
also if you want to see a difference disconnect the exhaust from the downpipe and go for a blat.

Yes the safety valve has been welded up.

Future plans will include an intercooler and a less restrictive exhaust system

I have gps software that will measure performance so I will give it a go when I get time to see what the old girl is actually achieving.

Re: Isuzu turbo diesel tuning guide

The cat you had on wasnt exactly a cat its just a filter i found out when i replace mine with pipe then
sold the supposed cat also i noticed no difference but did you?.
When i had the downpipe to system disconnected, ie zip tied up it kept up with a 1.6vtr saxo from a standstill
Go big bore mate, some have used standard systems off petrol astras and noticed difference.
On the gear box did you change the the 1.7 fly for 1.5 fly to fit the 1.5 box?

Re: Isuzu turbo diesel tuning guide

I removed the cat/filter when I swopped the engines so I could not make a direct comparison unfortunately.

The swop was not as straight forward as i thought, I ended up swopping the flywheel and clutch from the 1.5TD, the engine mount (timing cover end) was different and meant I had to swop the timing belt tensioner/backplate and cover over, the block casting was different by the starter motor and it fouled the gearlinkage so I had to cut a piece off and grind it back to the same shape as the 1.5TD, had to rotate the turbo housing so the outlet was in the same place as the 1.5TD but due to the wastegate it was not possible to get it in exactly the same position so I had to cut and modify the pipe that goes between the inlet manifold and turbo so that it lined up, also used the 1.5TD inlet manifold, the thermostate housing was also different with different pipes so I also swopped that over.

None of the problems was that bad but held me up as I was not expecting them.

I also advanced the pump timing 2 degrees as this is suppose to help the performance, and adjusted the valve clearances, it certainly does rev nice and smoothly for an old diesel

Re: Isuzu turbo diesel tuning guide

    Hello Flash,

I didn't removed the exhaust "filter" ( cat?).
    Is it necessary?

Is it possible to post you boost pressure here everyone who has tuned a Isuszu diesel.
Espescially who has put a 1.7 in a corsa using the stock transmission.
I'm wondering how mutch pressure is safe for the car. I drive mine every day. I drive it on veggie oil. I removed the white ring but didn't yet pump up the boost and fuel.

    thanks

What about if you fit the 1.7TD lump and box into the corsa, is it a straight swap then?? I was thinking of this conversion myself

You certainly know your stuff i always dreaded a cambelt change just in case i ruined the fuel timing. Was it fairly easy do the timing, ie did you time the pump with a gauge then lock it off? what position does the turbo point out at? in my astra it pointed down.

When i converted my astra from gm small block to bigblock,i used the bigblock legs, topmounts, gearbox, shafts etc is it the same for the corsa if you were to use the 1.7 gearbox?

    just curious cheers

On the cat as i didnt notice any difference as its not strictly a cat

    1.7bar equates to roughly 26psi

On turning the fuel up just remember it will probably fail the MOT smoke test, so turn it down before hand then back up after

yes, thats the reason i didn't remove the filter/cat. I was afraid for the smoke test, even if i adjusted the fuel before the test.

Jack has about 108 hp if i'm not mistaken. This is done whit 1 bar.
If you calculate, 54 Hp without turbo, 1 bar turbo pressure gives 108 HP
If you use 1,5 bar, you woud have about 135 hp.1.7 bar = 145 hp.
Thats allot of power for a 1.7 diesel. Would it hold it....?

109 actually, but I'll give you that. lmao

I'd love to drive one with that much boost! At the moment mine has been 100% reliable (touch wood). I don't think I'll be turning mine up any more.

Re: Isuzu turbo diesel tuning guide

The pump timing was quiet simple, I just marked 2 degrees before TDC on the crank pulley and then setup the pump timing as normal with it set at the 2 degree mark rather than TDC.

The turbo points upwards on the corsa as it does not have an intercooler.

The 'cat' is just a particle filter I believe, I had removed it on a previous 1.5TD corsa and it always passed the emission test running extra fuel and 1 bar boost pressure.

Once I have an intercooler fitted I would be hoping for 110-120 bhp and around 150-160lbs torque.

Mine puts out 169ftlbs and is lovely to drive. Once the Corsa's roadworthy I'm de-catting the Cavalier and doing some other choice bits and pieces.

More torque than my old golf gti lol

It did hold 26 without the system then back to 23-24 with it connected. A nice straight through system would see that power back i think.

I want something to play with again!!

Not sure of the litre but its bigger than standard i.c. and they go cheap like 20quid and all alloy no plastic ends to blow.

    another question,

what is the purpose of the white ring? I removed it but i wonder what it do or not do if its removed

Re: Isuzu turbo diesel tuning guide

The white ring restricts the movement of the fuel boost compensator, when your on full boost the ring stops the rod moving all of the way which restricts the extra fuel when on boost.

Adjusting the max fuel screw increases the fuel injected across the whole rev range, removing the white ring increases the fuel at full boost only.

169Lbs torque sounds nice, a good target to aim for

Re: Isuzu turbo diesel tuning guide

But max boost changes when you install a bleed valve...so
So if i understand it right, the rod of the fuel boost compensator goes always to the max when there is boost? If there is 0,5 bar ( 7 psi ) or 1 bar ( 14 psi ) the rod will always go to the max. ( it don't thing it is soa accurate) If the ring is removed there will be more fuel injected. how mutch is dependend of the max fuel screw.
So if you take a stock engine, and only remove the with ring, there will be al little power increasment because there will be more fuel at boost? ( only at full boost?)

I removed the white ring, but didn't yet set the bleed valve or adjusted the max fuel screw.
when i drive normal, the boost gauge goes about 7 psi ( 0,5 bar ).
When i floor it, it goes to 0,8 bar. i don't see any smoke.

suppose i adjust the bleed valve so max boost is 14 psi ( 1 bar ). Suppose i adjust the max fuel screw so at full throtle ( 1bar, 14 psi ) it give max fuel without smoking.
When i then drive normal, about 0,5 bar ( 7 psi ), then it wil smoke because it get more fuel because the with ring is removed and it get more fuel because i adjusted the max fuel screw?
