Yesterday I blew my engine up. I was driving along the M20 changed down from 6th to 5th and floored it.
It was fine for a while but then I lost all boost and the air behind the car started to get a little hazy. I pulled over only to open my bonnet to the sight of oil...... everywhere!
It was only running on 3 cylinders and now I know why:
Here you can see that No.1 is very clean indeed. I had been getting extremely por fuel consumption figures following the installation of my Hybrid Turbo. In some cases the fuel computer would read 6mpg under heavy acceleration! Also, on overrun it wouldn't always read 999.99 as it always had.
As you can see, OUCH! Big gaping holes at various places around the piston.
The fragments of piston seem to have welded themselves to the cylinder wall.
The pic below highlights the bad areas. These feel like deposits on the walls as they are raised.
The head as it looks now:
There are deposits on the head, it looks like they have also welded themselves together, the surface on No.1 is very rough all the way across.
The question is what do you think caused it? Over fuelling in Number 1? When I pulled the inlet manifold away from the head a load of petrol fell out. The end of the spark plug has been obliterated as well.
