C20LET Wars - Episode 2 - Attack of the Pistons
Right, the head is all sorted.
So, i need to sort the bottom end. Shopping/ to do list.
1. Strip bottom end.
Any Special Tools required for this??
2. Purchase new parts
Pistons - If i've got piston slap i'm gonna need a rebore aren't I. If i'm right then Piston slap is usually due to oval bores?!?!?
As for the bearings etc..... What *DO* I need and whats a *NICE TO HAVE/GOOD IDEA*?
3. Rebuild and enjoy. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh....... I await the day.
no special tools needed, except a e20 torx socket for that bastard crank bolt, oh and a piston ring compressor to put the pistons back in....
Big end bearing if u can afford them, get the GM ones, or im finding out about the wider lead bronze kolbenschmidt ones ..watch this space!
Yes you`ll need a rebore, ask your engineering hsop to find out how much, tubo pistons are only available in 0, and .5 sizes
I am a littl ecurious. Before the strip down I was getting Oil in the Air Intake pipes on both sides of the compressor. I would have thought that this would be caused by blown oil seals on the Turbo. However, I have changed the turbo for a recon and cleaned all the air pipes. But new oil appeared. Is it possible that the blown engine is throwing oil through some how (breather Pipes??) or is the recon turbo crap??
Try fitting an oil catch tank in the pipe that runs from the crancase, round the airbox (beside the turbo coolant hose) and down to the turbo inlet where the airbox hose also joins.
You wil see what I mean.
Cut the pipe somewhere and fit an oil catch tank in the space to see if this helps.
Why would there be so much oil coming through the breather pipe? It never did it until my engine popped. I changed the turbo and it got a lot better but its still doing it.
I don't think you can get oversize rings from GM anymore....
Laney - WTF didn't you just buy a new LET from GM? £1200 on exchange, and they are new as well!
I'm not buying GM ones. I wouldn't even if they did. My local VXL garage quoted me nearer to £5000 to replace the Engine. I'm on a VERY VERY VERY tight budget.
Brand new C20LET short with Head, internals... Just needs ancillaries.
Technically a re-con, but...
Vauxhall bought faaaasaands from GM Europe for the expected goldmine that was the Police using Cav Turbos
However, even the fuzz failed to blow up the indestructable LET. melted plenty of Turbos and TXBs but no engines.
Luton is choka block with LETs still in their original boxes. Vauxhall are flogging them off as Re-Cons.
£1200 is what my mate paid.
When it arrived it was packed in GM box and dated 1992. Measured the bores and whaddya know? Brand fecking new.
Even came with German instructions on running in procedures.
Rang the dealer, who said "Yep, we know they are new, but priced as re-cons"
The exact same thing happens with Driveshafts.
Dunk the GM rings are mahle rings wich are still sold, even vaux does .5 oversize rings for oversize pistons....mahle certainly does for both LET and XE
