I called into my local engine workshop today to talk rebuild plans. I was talking about 16v conrods etc when he said "I've got a 16v bottom end out there, you can have it for £150". Now I know I could get a complete 8v engine for that, but I rather fancy the 16v bottom end. Since I shelled out quite a lot for my 8v head I want to keep that. We checked out a spare 8v head on the 16v block, and no surprises , it fits.
So I'm being quoted for:
16v bottom end
small end inspection and new bearings if neccessary
new shells - he's getting race spec ones
lightened 16v flywheel
rebore to 87mm giving 2.045 L (the largest size std pistons, which cost £35 each incidently ha ha)
new oil pump
new water pump
full gasket set
RTV sump gasket sealant
Uporated con rod bolts
should be safe for 7500rpm that.
lovely lovely mmmm, you can see it makes sense.
Only two questions on my mind:
1 - will F16 fit? Yes I expect, but will the clutch mate up to the 16v flywheel? Or should I get an F20 anyway?
2- will 8v cam belt pulley fit on the end of the 16v crank shaft?
Oh, and I think a reconditioned gearbox is required. So shall I keep F16 (clutch problems?) or shall I go F20. But I'd like to lower the final drive ratio as well by 5% by fitting a final drive out of an 1.8 Sri.
