    why confused

fact it is in the oil feed to head
fact it is a oil restrictor
fact it is a non return valve
fact it keeps oil from returning back down in gallory via normal drainage
fact you dont need it but will help stop the tappets rattling on start up ,if theyare a little worn. and retricts the amount of oil to head and keeps it the pressure in the blocks bearings lmao

I best get one bought then! I've taken a look at the photos of my build up and there's not one there.

    Cheers

it does nothing....i took it out and tested everything which is why im vwery certian that it does not supply the lifters in any way

it only takes less than a teaspoon of oil to bepress the spring anyway

i removed mine and drove round fine without it....its just a return, if you look down the hole it leaves all you see is the sump

the head is supplied (strangely enough) by the oilways

leave it out, you dont ned it ben

TFS I'm 99% sure cyclonebri is correct, its in the feed.

If you look at the oil ways in the head, there is a cut out that joins the oil way to the head bolt hole:

If the oil drains back down this hole, it will leave the centre oil way empty, the risers to the cam oil ways, and the cam oil ways, plus if the lifters are in the wrong way (more in a second) they will partialy drain, thus when you start up it and take a few seconds to a minute to refill everything plus get the air out of the lifter to get it fully filled with oil and opening properly.

Take a look at Gary's sectioned head, it shows the oil ways pritty clearly, showing how oil would come up from that feed in the block up the head bolt hole, fills the centre gallery, which is connected to the risers which are connected to the cam galleries which feed the oil along the length of the cams:

When lifters go in, they should always be pointing at the centre of the engine, opposite to the hole in the head that feeds them with oil. There are I beleive a couple of reasons for it, the lifters are on an angle, the centre of the head being their highest point and the hole in the head being the lowest. If you put them in with the hole in the lifter facing the hole in the block, the oil is more likely to drain out, but when the oil starts to fill them it will trap an air buble in the lifter allowing it to tap untill the air is out and its full of oil, it the hole is at the top (opposite the hole in the head) it will have more chance of the air getting out and refilling with oil, plus it won't loose as much oil while standing.
