My engine has developed a squeek when you start it up that comes from roughly the drivers side of the engine bay (I need to get my ears serviced). I think its either the alternator belt and/or the power steering belt that are old (they are correctly tensioned). To confirm this I was wondering it I could just disconect/remove them temporarliy and start the car to see if it still squeeks.
Does anyone have any reasons why this wouldn't be a good idea, I know the battery won't last long but I only want to run it for a minute to see if its something easy or I need to start worrying me.
mine used to do this with new belts. I was figuring it was either the altenator shaft bushes or the power steering pump. Ive ditched the whole power steering and the altenator is still making good power so i just live with it.
got a friend in the trade, he puts water and washing up liqid on the belts to quieten them up , works quite well, try it and see. if it works then you know you could do with new belts if it dosent then its something else.
