whilst doing a 1.6 16V conversion on a Nova, we've come across a stumbling block. We were told to use a GSi bottom pulley + alternator, as the 16V engine uses a wide-belt, and doesn't fit (Interferes with the drivers side chassis leg).
But, the crank sensor gets it's pickup off the bloody bottom pulley! so now it has the GSi botom pulley on, and the crank sensor has no feedback if you will.
Is there a v-belt version of the 16v engines, which has the crank sensor teeth on it? Other wise how can we get round it?
I'm sure it can't run without the crank sensor working, and I've just been told this for definate.
hi ya, yep, whipped the gear box out in a few minutes! LOL!
need to sort the crank sensor out.
And ADVICE: ALWAYS PUT THE F15 BOX + 16V ENGINE TOGETHER FIRST!! LOWER THE CAR OVER THEM.
The F15 doesn't allow you to simply remove the clutch drive, so you have to try and mate them up with the clutch drive out. Needless to say that didn't work, and in the end, we had to drop the box back out, remove the tie bars, etc, etc to drop the eng+box to the floor to put them together, and then lift them back up through the bay.
Aren't there any v-belt drive corsa 16V's out there? surely the ones without PAS/Aircon run a v-belt. Might be worth a look at the halfords applications list for a v-belt application on a 16V corsa, and then get the bottom pulley from one of them if there is one.
Ste_sa just suggested modifying the chassis leg, but that seems extreme for the 1.6. After removing the wide-belt drive of the Corsa pulley, I could get the V-belt section of the Nova GSi pulley welded on if needs be. That would give the correct bottom pulley then.
Look for a mk3 or mk4 astra 8v in the breakers yard as they use the 1.6 sv 8v engine from the nova gsi but with the later siemens full engine management which uses a crank sensor. My friend has a L reg Nova gsi which have siemens engine management, which means he has no airflow meter, a waisted spark coil and the 8v pulley with the crank sensor phonic wheel on it.
or a 1.4 8v from a corsa Ive got a corsa 1.4 8v pulley with crank sensor on my nova sport because i have full dta engine management on it, and there is loads of room.
I rang just novas yesterday and said that I was running the wrong pulley, even though mine was a gsi pulley it's a early gsi pulley and they didn't run crank sensor's till the late spec gsi's but there is one nova that has run them since they started making them and thats the SRi, they started making them around K plate I think, and thats the time they started putting crank sensor's on the bottom pulley of a gsi.....
Ordered it yesterday at 8pm, on 24 hour delevery so will be here tomorrow. So tomorrow evening she will be running..... SHE WILL I SAY..... :lol
so brian on your how to guide.... put you need to run a bottom end pulley from a nova sri rather than a gsi so people don't have the same problem as me.
Incidentley that should mean it will miss the cam housing as it should bring it out by an 1" I am not sure what belt you need but I would have though it would still be the V belt rather than the wide thingy....
I still reckon that the Corsa gsi pulley would acctually fit just but it's what belt you would use....?????
