in my 1.6 8v cavy the engine diagnostic light should come on when the ignition is on. A few months ago this didnt happen but the engine management light came on when the engine was running. It came down to a loose wire in the engine knock sensor.
I've got the same problem.
I don't get it when its not warm, but anything hot and the problems start.
Its fine if its not been driven for a while. However if I stop at the petrol station in hot whether its pot luck if it starts or not. It starts fine if the ECU light comes on but if it doesn't then i'm stuck where I am.
I was stuck outside a diy shop for 15 mins this afternoon.
So Andy, What is my next step then? Can the relay be repaired? Or has it got to be replaced, if so who easy is this to do?
Are the relays expensive.
I've had this problem looked at by a mechanic, who said there was no fuel pressure, but before he could do anything about the car kicked over.
I've just found out when if the Engine Diagnostic Light (EDL) doesn't come on, if I put the jump leads on the battery and get a nice person to lend me their car to connect the leads to, the EDL comes on stright away and the car starts no problem.
Is it possible that my battery is s**t and with my ICE and Alarm hooked up it drains my battery so much that their isn't enough juice left to power the Fuel Pump Relay (or some other electrical system)?
It's worked every time over the last 2 days!
I'm not sure if this would work for you Terry, It might be your Fuel Pump relay. It might even be mine too!
I had exactly the same problem on a 1990 Astra GTE 2.0 8v whereby the car would turnover but not start. This problem was intermittent. I went to Vauxhall and they said it was the fuel pump relay. I bought one for £12 and had no problems thereafter. Hope this helps.
Adamski, I've just changed my Fuel pump relay.
If you take off the black plastic trim which runs from the bonnet release handle and runs underneath your door card. Take this off and right next to the bonnet release handle is your ECU and a relay. The relay is for your fuel pump. If its a grey relay you need to change it. I went to Vauxhall this afternoon to get a replacement relay. The bloke said that Vaux changed this relay years ago due to problems which both you and me have had.
If you have a grey one part no.90230894, which I did you now need part no.90378651 which is black.
I've not had any problems with the new one, but i've only had it in for couple of hours.
Hope this helps, oh yeah the new relay comes to just over £26 form Vaux.
I'll let you know how I get on
Adamski, I know what your talking about mate. you pull up to petrol station exhaust rumbling, bass pumping. Everyone looks at the car admiringly.
You fill up get back in the car try kicking it over,BUT it won't start.
The smug b@stard drives off in his reliable shed.
You noticed nobody offers to help if you do break down in a tasty looking motor?
Hope the new relay sorts out you problem like it did mine
Andy my relay definitely was grey, got next to me now.
The bloke at Vaux was surprised that it was in my car, i'm not sure wether it rolled out the factory with it or the gimp who owned it before put it in. It was glued in, looked like it had never been touched before.
Cheers for the advice mate
