After last weekendís fun and games with my gearbox i decided to change the transmission oil completely today. Cracked all the diff cover bolts, then levered the plate down at the front end. Hmm weird, i didnít realise gearboxes were lubricated with cappuccino. I let it drain (and thanks to the wind, mostly all over the tarmac) and then tightened the bolts and filled it up with two lovely bottles of comma hypoid SE80. Which incidentally smells great, especially the patch on my carpet where its been leaking since Tuesday
Then i jumped the car full of glee at just completing a non-specified routine service operation. I sat there clicking between gears, oooh thatís nice and smooth, shwiff shwifff, clunk, errr, oh dear, its jammed in 5th again like it did in the lay-by last Friday. How cool.
It looks like i SO havenít fixed the jumping selector in the gearbox. I know how to relocate it, after messing around last time. I had to take the mechanism off the top of the gearbox and re seat it. so now Iím tip toeing round again hoping it doesnít do it when i pull up to a junction, f@ck sake.
I donít really have a danny le roux when it comes to gearboxes, but just after the rod enters the gearbox there is a L shaped bit that looks like a dogs back leg, one end has this little tab that locates in-between some teeth on what looks like a bunch of sliding rods which run laterally across the box. The toe, so to speak, of the dogleg just goes in a big dip in the casting of the bell housing. From what i can presume, the tab on the mechanism is jumping out of the locating teeth on those sliding rods. I donít know why, or how to fix it.
