    Water Pump !

ermm how do ya find out if its on its way out ?? as someone i know heard me car runnin and reckoned that it was on its way out ... because of the engine making a whinning noise when revving ? also me car seems to be use more water than usual ??

also is this a problem if im still driving it ?? will this affect the durability of any other parts in the engine ?? is it gonna be a big problem .. really ?

    cheers.

My water pump went a while ago, it was loosing water proper fast, the engine over heated really fast. If it may be on its way out i'd get it sorted.

mine went about a month ago.

    symptoms:

pissin water like a schoolgirl when iding
(u could see this when it was wet...like a oil like puddleon the ground)

    using loadsa water/coolant
(averaged out at about 1 litre every 1/2 hour when driving)

in the morning when i went to start up, it would misfire and run rough as f**k
(water gettin into of the cylinders)

whn u do the water pum u r best doin he timing belt too, and check the pretensioners. mine ere f**ked. cbelt was ok, but i got it changed anyway.

    price: £320

and that was wih a discount cos i know the guy (and the car was sitting in his garage for 3 weeks)

Looks like I've got that fun job to do to your car then?

Luckily cam belt was done only a few hundred miles ago, and not tensioners on the Nova GTE engine. Just that big bag of fun of getting the pump unstuck and out.

Pattern QH part or genuine vaux?
(opening a can of worms or what.... ) lmao

knackered water pumps dont whine, they go screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, like metal on metal scraping. The whining is belts, either altenator or cambelt. Its usually cased by over tight belt or maybe just a worn belt. It could also be the cambelt rollers (tensioner and idler).

You have got nothing to loose replacing the water pump, cause you will have to replace the cambelt at the same time. Ive got a QH water pump and its been sound for 2 years. I would recommend getting a proper vauxhall cambelt though. Its kinda important for it to last.

mine went last month after gradually loosing water ,about a tankful every month. then it lost a litre every 10 mins

changed pump and belt and everything is a lot quieter now.

i got pump and belt for £25 (belt was a gates powergrip same as vaux genuine part)

Could also be the alternator bearings, but in this case I'd go for the water pump.

A car doesn't use water, if the level goes down, there's a problem somewhere.

I'd say yes it's a problem, someday the pump stops working, with the side effect of no cooling. According to Murphy's Law you'll notice to late and the head gasket is gone....
    My advice: fix it a.s.a.p

P.S you can “check” the bearings of the water pump (or alternator) with a large (long) screwdriver (use it like a stethoscope). With the engine running: put one end on the housing of the pump and put your ear on the handlebar of the screwdriver. This way you can hear the bearing rolling or a more “grinding” noise. Beware not to get caught by the “fan”belt.

cheers for the replies ... i thought it wa sjust the alternator belt being to tight ... but speakin to someone last night made me think otherwise, as me car looses water , makin a wierd nise when revved and the temp gauge also is all over the place, as in heat up when revved cools when idled for a min and ges mad if maintaining a constant speed ... soo theres a little more for you all
