Has anyone got any ideas as to why my car is losing/ burning oil?
There ain't any excessive blue smoke coming out exhaust or anything, but there is a slight leak making the engine wet. BUT NO DRIPPING OR POOLS OF OIL UNDER CAR WHEN STATIONARY. I've used a bit of gunk on it to try and see where it is coming from.
maybe this leaking oil is burning off from the outside of the engine coz u can smell it and sometimes smoke or steam comes off it after longer journeys from under the sparks somewhere!
Do u think i need to change my gaskets?
I took it to a garage to ask 'em what they thought- the guy said that i should clean the oil seperator for the breather hoses- which i have done- awkward messy job that! He also told me to change rocker head gasket.
there seems to be oil slowing seeping from around the head or block. BUT is this factor enough to lose a significant amount of oil?
Find where the leak origin is--- sump, oil pump (bottom pulley on cam belt), head, cambox or cam sproket o ring (look for oil behind cam cover),and if you have a carb car check the feul pump at rear of engine.
I have had a lot of problems with oil leaks, many i just dont bother about unless it starts to get really messy. If your engine is burning oil you would get black/blue smoke in that case you may need to replace the valve stem oil seals (reasonably easy depending on engine) or it could be your piston rings (leave a weekend for that one).
yeah, most of the oil is in the sump while stationary, and the sump can easily hold all 3.5 or whatever it is amount of oil in your 1.4.
When the car is moving, firstly its under a llot of pressure from the oil pump, its thinner cause of engine heat and its all around the engine too. So its more likely to leak when moving, if this is the case it will blow back all over the bulkhead, suspension mounts, rubber bushes, exhaust and leading edge of under carriage.
change the gasket for pennies, have a snoop around under you car for oily muddy build from the sump backwards down the car.
ive had a few 1.3/1.4s in my time 4 in two years to be exact. The first engine died when i put a conrod through the block. The second burned sooo much oil i just had to get rid of it (Well i did take it to 42 mph in first. The third blew a head gasket. The fourth was a 1.4 that i salvaged from my sisters wee accident, which involved an astra on wet road a corner and a wall (with a barrel roll inbetween).
My cavalier 1.6 has an oil leak at the oil pump, specifically the ring seal that sits behind the cam cover. The oil spills onto the cambelt and works onto the fan/alternator belt. the result is oil on the engine mount and chassis leg. The bulk head is covered too. any similarities???
But does your cav lose a significant amount of oil - so much that it gets a bit annoying when you have to keep topping up... and the smell of burning oil is getting on my nerves a bit too!
It does sound similar to your cav though.
