Sorry if this has been asked before but which oil is best?.I'm running an astra gsi 2litre16v with 70000 on the clock, currently i change the oil every 6000 miles with mobil 1.The cams are a bit ticky mostly when cold and someone mentioned the oil i'm using is on the thin side?(not to mention bloody expensive!!)any ideas guy's.....cheers
mixed opinions with oil really. Ive read a buying guide for gte16v which said mobil would cure the ticking. Anyhow, the arguments are thin oil will pump up the tappets quicker, or it will drain easier, thick oil wont pump up so quick, but, will obviously remain in the tappets cause its thicker.
Anyhow i change my oil every 3000 miles, or 3 months with the 10w40 GTX magnetec the greeny grey coloured one ,marked for advanced modern engines. (define advanced !!)
It all depends whether you want to save your engine or buy cheap oil. 0W-40 oil like Mobil 1 will get around your engine quicker when cold, which is when most wear occurs. When your engine is warm, then 0W-40 works as well as 15W-40, or anything in between because then it's the 40 that matters. My advice is buy Mobil 1 or cheap 15W-40, anything else is a compromise which doesn't make sense.
