    EGR valve

Ok corsa is flashing up a EGR code, so i phoned autovaux for a price, 130 all in, which if its gonna fix the car, isnt to bad.

However what exactly is the valve? What am I getting for my money?

Plenty of scrap yards around here I could steal one off and try instead of splashing out on a new one, but I need to know what it looks like and if they are a generic part for different engines.

Anyone got a picture of one to assist me?

    Re: EGR valve

I think most people clean it, it clogs up due to the exhaust gas passing through it.
Never done it myself, just heard that a good clean usually solve the problem.

    Re: EGR valve

    Where is it?

The car has only done 53K, I would be a bit upset if it had gone wrong so soon.

    Re: EGR valve

    I have cleaned it...
The valve (on a corsa 1.4/1.6 16v) is under the upper tract of the inlet manifold on the right (bonnet view). To access you need to remove the upper manifold and move away (or remove) the water expansion tank.
I have cleaned the ducts from rust and have leaved the valve 2hr in gasoline, after i have cleaned it with a rag. After i have lubricated the steam with spray silicone grease.
This as worked great for me (the error code is 3 month that not appear)...

It's the circular metal thing, infront of your rocker cover.

You also have 'what looks like' an electronic alternator to the right of the rocker.

There will be 2 vacuum pipes going to the valve itself.

It helps get the Catalytic Converter get upto temperature quicker, thus making your car more fuel efficient

Thats the one I was aiming for Olly, take that off and give it a clean out. Cant do any harm.

the one behind the inlet manifold is some air sensor from what I have read.

In my X16XE (and X14XE) i'm sure that the egr is under the intake manifold, near the expansion tank (Haynes manual )

    Re: EGR valve

    Hi,

The silver thing at the front is the secondary air injection valve, the EGR valve is under the inlet manifold and is held on by 2 M8 allen head bolts, clean the plunger inside with some WD40 and a screwdriver to scrape away the crap

    egr valve doesnt do that
    thats secondary air injection
egr valve uses a small amount of exhaust gas injected into the cylinder to slow the burn time down a bit reducing toxic exhaust gases

    Re: EGR valve

I know little about EGR but I think your looking for an electrical fault. Solonoid with 2 pipes and an electrical connector.
I wouldn't have thought cleaning the pipes will turn the light off.
Replacing it or checking the connector might

    your right
my brothers astra had the same fault, dirty sticking valve had caused the small egr control solonoid to burn out causing the fault code

    Re: EGR valve

The ECU only checks for current flow.

So long as the solenoid is OK and the connector/loom are OK, the ECU won't know the state of the EGR valve.

The one on the Estate, is just hanging loose on the loom, with the EGR ports blanked.
