With all your South African contacts I was wondering if you'd have any ideas on the price of a 200ts engine. I'm looking at supercharging mine with a sprintex at the moment, but the 200ts engine is my other option. The Cally turbo engines are too rear here so the cost is prohibitive, your thoughts please?
Well, there is a spares place in Johannesburg who I used. Prices for Opel stuff seem to be quite reasonable over there. Not sure the same can be said for the 200ts engine. Not a great deal were made you see, so prices may be scarey. As opposed to over here where the Calibra and Cav turbo engines are available.
Cav's were not available in South Africa so that's one less car they have over there without that engine.
The Calibra was available, but only a handfull were turbo versions.
With regards to Shipping, I used a South African based Seafreight company called ECU line. They run a twice weekly shuttle between Tilbury and Durban. Not sure about their routing to Australia though. Would have though it would have been possible.
The main trouble is not the cost over there for the shipping and the bits, it's the cost of customs clearance your end, tax, documents etc etc. I think half the total cost of the logisitcs was the documentation and tax costs over here which are riduclous.
They are based on minimum amounts, since my bumper only cost me about £40 it didn't matter. I still had to pay the minium amount. I managed to get away without paying VAT on it, but I still had to pay duty. I think I payed about £150 for transit of goods from Johannseburg to Durban then Seafreight from Durban to Tilbury, S.A documents etc etc. Which isn't bad. But then I had to pay a further £150 for other 'hidden' costs over here which were never mentioned to me.
Well it looks like the easiest way would be to import one from over where you guys are. I can imagine the shipping/tax costs to be huge though. Maybe I will just supercharge it in the end. If I was to look at a Cally/Cav turbo C20LET, what sort of price range and mileage would I be up for? Thanks for the advice guys.
The Turbo engines exc. 6-speed box go roughly for around £1,000, mileage is variable, but these cars are getting on a bit now with the earliest being a 95 which is now 7 years old so expect most engines to be around 70,000 but probably more, unless your lucky and find a low mileage one. The 6-speed box will set you back around another £400-£500. If you do a search in General chat Animal had posted up some information he looked at a while ago about Supercharging a C20XE, the kit was made by a Swedish company.
