just putting my engine back together after doing headgasket etc. and I need some help with tensioning the timing belt.
The engine is the astra mk3 c14se (1.4 mpi) and, although I have done this before the sodding thing isnt happening!
Right I have the belt on (taught at the front- between the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket) and I am trying to rotate the cooling pump to tension the belt. The thing I dont understand is lining up the tensionor arm with the V in the backplate. If I turn the pump clockwise it is supposed to tense the belt, which it does not, and if I turn the pump anticlockwise it should (according to Haynes) make it line up properly.
Now am I really stupid or something, but I need to tense it (ie. turn clockwise) AND line it up (ie turn anti clockwise) HOW CAN I DO BOTH!!!!??
Any help is most appreciated - been at it all day and I keep walking through the house and kicking things in and stubbing my toe in the process......
Ive given up now anyway. Im going to respray the car and come back to it next week. Even had a mechanic mate come out for a quick look- he told me to take off the water pump and cover, and see if anything hinders the water pumps' movement.
Did that, o ring had stretched somehow, got a new one- helped with the tension BUT have one more problem:
when the water pump is turned clockwise, the tensioner arm on the tensioner sprocket should lift, thus lining up with the v in the backplate. In turning the pump, it IS tensioning the belt, but the arm is not moving into the right position.
Does it really matter if this arm is not lined up with the backing plate, because ALL the timing marks are lined up, the belt is tensioned adequatly and when turning the crankshaft, everything moves lovely. What would happen if I started her up?
Ahhhh I new I should have just slapped an xe in there.
ok finally sorted it! So for anyone who is reading this and has the same problem - ensure that the lug on the backplate to the tensioning sprocket is located in the oil pump hole. Dont you just love it when you figure things out........ on your own!! lol
