Find somebody with a windy gun and a compressor you can borrow.

Failing that, and this is a trick used by karters, stick the socket on a variable speed drill with a clutch and a hammer action. (Karters use a cordless with hammer and clutch to do their wheel bolts.)

A few seconds with the hammer knocking on the clutch and it may come undone.

Re: Let bottom crank pulley bolt

i used a slightly unorthodox method.........

I set a breaker bar so it was wedged against the floor and then started the engine.....making sure the HT lead was disconnected.

    Worked after the 3rd attempt.

I only 'flicked' the started so as to shock the bolt

Re: Let bottom crank pulley bolt

did you get it mate? ive got a bar i have modified that bolts onto the other side of the crank(requires clutch and flywheel off) to hold the crank from the other side while smoeone abuses the crank nut with a 3ft bar.

ps get a half inch socket AT LEAST as anything smaller wont cop it..

Re: Let bottom crank pulley bolt

rodger we didn;t and we have the flywheel off so that we can use the xe bits for clutch but we bend all the bolts when we use them to ut a rod in them...
i'd say id come up n borrow ur tool but i can't as the astra is now engine less.. bollocks.. i'm away to find a massive pole

Re: Let bottom crank pulley bolt

he has a point fra. its below the head that rusts on so when you cut the head off the thread just unscrews, but i like the satisfaction of gettin it off with the bars. anyway ive had a look and i cant find the ***kin bar for the flywheel but ive got rhe breaker bar and socket you are welcome to use them if you want.

do you have a dril and some decent sized(and sharp) drill bits by any chance?

Re: Let bottom crank pulley bolt

its not rust thats holding it in, its the fact its done up to over 200lbf-ft

ive done the starter method twice, and a bar method once. the key to the bar method is locking the crank effectivley. very very hard without a flywheel on. block of wood between the big end and the edge of the block maybe ?

Re: Let bottom crank pulley bolt

i always remove the flywheel to do it. obviously not practical when the engine is in the car, thats when the starter method is used. but engine out i use this on the crank

    never failed me yet

Re: Let bottom crank pulley bolt

I used the 1 ton gun at work. Its used for cracking off (ooh er) dumper wheels etc. It is torqued-up to 250Nm, so it will be fecking difficult to undo.
