probably a silly question, but i'm a bit rubbish with mechanics , wots the difference with the gearbox and the transfer box?
i've got a bit of a problem with the casing on my f28 box - at the mo its only secured with 2 bolts instead of 3 and i think it may leaking gearbox oil. i've been told i need either a new box or at least a new casing.
also in the mean time, how easy is it to check the oil level in the gearbox and put more in?
The gearbox deals with the gears, the transfer box deals with putting the power to the rear wheels. I dont know what the gearbox is connected to via 3 bolts.
Its easy to check the gearbox oil level and to top it up. If you look through the wheel arch at where the passenger side drive shaft leaves the gear box, at about 2 o' clock there is about an 8mm allen key socket, take that out, pour oil in the filler on the front top of the box and wait for oil to come out of the allen plug, once oil comes out stop pouring and wait for it to stop coming out of the hole. Then its at the right level. There is a time delay between pouring and it coming out the level hole, so do it slowly.
Have a look at the gotchas on max-boost.co.uk for a diagram of the filler, level and drain plugs.
