Right here it goes, please bear with me! I've got a Corsa with a 2.0 16v. I've had this problem for a while now and I still cant find what's causing it.
What happens is when I try to start it, it fires up but cuts out immediately. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does I have to wait about 15-20 mins before it will start and stay running. I thought it was the fuel relay so replaced that and all seemed fine until PVS! Was on a stand there and when I went to go it wouldn't start! Finally got it going after an hour of trying, but as I was driving out of Santa Pod it cut out on me! Waited another 5 mins and it started up again, got 500 metres down the road and it did it again! It did this another 2 times! So I finally gave up and called the RAC out. He fiddled about with it but couldn't find anything wrong with it. He followed me for about half a hour to see if it would cut out again but it didn't and all seemed fine.
Then after a week of it sitting on my drive the battery went completely flat! Got a new battery and for the next week it ran perfect. It then went into a bodyshop, while it was in there I had some Morrettes lights fitted, the bloke had the lights on while he was adjusting them and in 2 hours the brand new battery was flat! He charged it up overnight but as soon as you connected it again in the morning it would be flat within 2 hours! Found a relay on the new lights which was broke so changed that and thought that would cure it!
Got the car back last Tuesday and drove it for a couple of hours that day. Parked up for half hour, got back in the car, it started up but cut out immediately! Finally got it going after about 10 goes, drove 5 mins down the road and it cut out as I was driving! And then every time it fired up it would cut out again! Managed to get it home and its been sitting on my drive since, went to start it yesterday but the battery was flat again!
I had someone connect it up to a computer and do some tests on it and he said the alternator wasn't working properly. With the engine running the voltage was about 12.8 and with everything on the voltage dropped to 11.9! I'm having a new alternator fitted to see if it cures the problem.
The engine doesn't actually cut out completely while driving, I just loose any acceleration, I'll be pumping the accelerator but nothing happens, the revs keep dropping and as it gradually slows down it stalls! But what I want to know is could the alternator be causing the engine to cut out while driving? What I don't understand is that it will fire up every time but cut out immediately?
If you got this far thanks for reading it all! Any help would be much appreciated.
