Does anyone know the quickest procedure to change a full set of hydraulic tappets, on a x20xev(16v 1999 engine) . I assume you can leave the head on (only carried it out on ford CVH before). Plus any special tools needed??Many thanks
Yes it's very simple.
You'll need to remove the cam cover, timing belt outer cover and timing belt.
You'll see the caps holding the camshafts down into the cylinder head.
Progressively remove the bolts (Torx head) and lift off the caps, keeping them in order.
Give each cam a wiggle and lift it clear of the head.
Then use a sucker (valve grinding stick..?) or magnet and pull out the cam followers.
Unfortunately, I don't think this can be done whithout removing the head. Obviously, having worked on a CVH you'll be used to changing valve stem oil seals and I know that there's a special tool on those.....
but I'm not familiar with one for an XEV engine.
As always, it's a case of holding the valve shut while you compress the spring to remove the collets and you'll struggle without removing the head IMO.
