HELP! Whine in gear & now no gears - do I need a new gearbox?
If anyone has any idea of this, please advise me! I've got a P reg Vectra SRi with 100k miles.
I had the whine in certain gears (only when the clutch was up), which the garage thought was the gearbox. They told me that it was only the early stages and booked it in the have it replaced, whilst I went looking for a gearbox.
This morning I got in the car and it's knackered - couldn't get it out of reverse for ages and now it's in neutral on the stick but, still bites if I lift the clutch.
Should i go ahead with the gearbox replacement or is it the release bearings in the clutch? Do I need both?! I haven't bought the gearbox yet and don't want to if it might be the clutch.

Thanks, I thought that i was the box but, just concerned about the release bearings on the clutch as well. The whine was on when in gear and the clutch was up, so looks like you are right - new gearbox here I come!
