Model 1.6 Sport 1995 Ecotec engine with Multec-s Injection.
Problem: Engine cutting out when revs dropping after engaging clutch. Also poor idling (Seems to be misfiring). No error codes from ECU.
On 1st start of engine IE when cold the misfire seems worse and can be felt more in higher gears at low revs.
Revs can be between 600 –900 rpm on tick over
Changed out Air Idle Motor valve. No change. Engine still stalls on occasions
Spark plugs 1 and 4 seem to be sutty where-as 2 and 3 look in good condition.
I have used SDT and redx no change.
I have read lots of information on what do with 1.8 and 2.0 engines with cleaning throttle housing and Air mass Flow sensor. (1.6 does not have Air mass flow sensor. Also the Crank case breather pipe is large enough not to block and has been checked)
All other checks made are:-
1.Cleaned our all vacuum hoses
2.replaced Air Idle Valve with new one (brand New), Cleaned out all air idle holes on throttle body.
3. Spayed carb cleaner into throttle body housing.
4.Had Tech1A Connected to check EGR valve and all temperatures. Etc.
5.REDX and STD injection cleaner/valve cleaner used.
6.HT Leads Changed out twice.
7.Fuel filter changed.
8.Fuel header pressure OK.
All the checks seem to be fine, not sure what else to check.
Could it be a cylinder head gasket leak? I can see how this would create the misfire but not the dropping off in revs.
On reading your web site there seems to be some strong links between this problem and the following equipment sensors:-
MAP, Air Idle valve, ECU, throttle Body sensor, Temperature sensor.
I have checked all the temperatures using the TECH1A
Any help would be very useful as I am pulling my hair out.
My local VX dealer can not find a problem and says that all he can do it swap parts out to see if it fixes the problem. I do not like having to pay for things that are nor broken!!
Thanks in anticipation!!
