according to haynes xe cambelts must be tensioned at vauxhall with a special tool, is that the only way? ive done them on other cars and tensioned them by feel with no probs. whats the score?
would you say its not as critical as haynes make out? not sure if they put that in (special tool bla bla bla) for every car or just xe's? i normaly drive sh#tters so havent been particualy carfull before.
i didnt use any tools, just tightened it up with the cam sprockets so it was tight between the crank + exhaust cam, then did the tensioner by hand
couldnt really get it too tight
if its the early type, theres a sqaure hole in the tensioner carrier that a 3/8 extension bar fits perfectly. so that means you can use a ratchet or bar to twist the tensioner.
as gary said really. you need it somewhere inbetween flapping around alarmingly like an elastic band, and sounding like a supercharger. ive found the quater turn on tne lengest stretch rule of thumb a tiny bit too tight most of the time.
mmm - be careful if you use a 3/8 bar to tension it as then it is easy to over tighten.
I've always used a long allen key in the tensioner bolt, with a metal sleeve over it - then I lean on it and nip it up at the same time.
