1VE GOT A 91 J PLATE CAV GSI AND WAS WONDERING WETHER IT WAS WORTH PARTING WITH THE NECESSARY DOSH FOR A ECU CHIP. WHAT POWER GAINS CAN I EXPECT? THE CAR HAS A FULL MONGOOSE SYSTEM AND DE CAT AND THE CARS DONE 124K. ANY ONE GOT ANY EXPERIENCE OR THOUGHTS??? CHEERS!!!lmao
I have got the superchip in my cav gsi 1991 with a panel filter and Magnex exhaust inc decat pipe and mine was rolling roaded at 154 bhp. It drives loads better than standard no 'Rough running'. Even if I hadn't gained any power increase I would have been happy with just the improvments of the driveabilty. It drives like an 8v bottom end (nice and tourqey) and then comes on even stronger top end. Everyone slags Superchips off but in my oppinion it worked really well.
A Superchip is an 'off-the-shelf' product which means for one type of car (ie the Cav Gsi) every chip is the same. Every standard chip put in by Vauxhall is also the same so what is the difference?
Difference is simple, the Superchip's 'push' the limits of the engine a little more, increasing the rev limit a bit, the ignition timing a bit and so on.
All engines are different, if you took the best and worst examples of say the Vauxhall 2.0 16v C20XE you would probably find that the best was putting out 162bhp and the worst 138bhp. This is down purley to mass production and because not everything aligns right inside etc...
If you add a Superchip to a 138bhp engine a huge increase will occur, obviously because you've gained 25bhp or something. But if you add one to the 162bhp engine it will actually make it worse.
A UNIchip is mapped to your exact engine and the worse case scenario is that no increase will be gained and you can rest assured that your engine is very special.
A Superchip is alot cheaper (almost half the price) but you take a sort of 'gamble'. Nothing against the superchip, for some people it obviously works well and for others it makes their car run worse.
NOTE: These are purley my own observations and are a very general and quick overview and in no way are meant to be definitive but just to give an idea.
