She has a habit of slipping the clutch at junctions rather than using the handbrake, the mats always jammed under the pedal so it doesnt go all the way down when changing gears etc etc.
a couple of weeks ago I get a call saying its stopped at a junction and wont go into gear. After it had cooled down it drove fine, no evidence of slip. I presume she smoked the friction linings, but hoped it might come good once it cooled, which it seemed to.
Over the last few days its seemingly been getting harder and harder to get into gear (fine with the engine is off though) untill today when i get another call saying its completely shafted.
At idle it makes a harsh squeeling noise, and when the clutch is pressed, it makes a horrendous grating noise and wont go into gear. the clutch pedal feels stiff and notchy. Lots of loose rattling sounds like bits of metal being shaken in a tin can.
Obviously the clutch is a gonner, but I have heard a roumor about these cars liking to eat up the gearbox input shaft when the clutch goes. Is this true? any way to tell before I take it to bits or will i have to wait and see?
