Any thoughts on this apreciated:
It seems that my turbo is knackered beyond repair and it's exchange turbo time, at a cool £625 + VAT.
Discussing it over the phone it seems the exhaust housing is knackered. The wastegate seat is cracked, which I knew about (very very small, no noticable step on the seat), and also know just about all K16's are. It was boosting OK like this. Has anyone had any luck replacing the seat? They say they don't any more as it doesn't work too well. Yet I've seen stuff mentioning hardened seats that can be fitted, with no bad reports?
Other than that I can't think what else is so wrong that it can't be rebuilt, he sait it 'fell apart'. Yet no noise, bearing play is minimal, boosting fine. Only it started smoking on idle badly after about 1.5 weeks of P2 (119K original turbo... I was expecting it). I went back to standard chips, and it's only done about 50 miles since it started smoking (had to get it around to sort crash repairs).
So what I can't figure out is, I asked about a core exchange and he said it's not really the core that's the problem it's the exhaust housing. So other than the wastegate seat (which I don't see as a big problem), and the wastegate bush which is easy to change, what elso could go wrong with the housing?
No way I'm spending £750 on an exhange turbo, nor the overpriced hybrids availiable. I don't think (well, I hope) they aren't trying to be dodgy. He's going to get back to me on monday with more options. But if the wastegate seat crack is the main problem them I'm happy to live with it so long as it won't get worse and start affecting boost?
(also had a puncture on my bike which I'm using to get to work so had to nurse that home while my very shiney accident repaired car that I haven't been able to drive for 3 weeks now is sitting there with no turbo, what a great day)
