if you are running standard everything then you never will feel a big kick when the turbo spins up. However you should notice more of a push in your back. I can't remember if you have a boost gauge or not, but standard boost should roughly be; overboost to 0.8 and hold at 0.6 bar.
The only way you'll every feel a big kick from the turbo is to do something like this:
Huge intercooler, chip, -34 acutator, possibly hybrid turbo etc.
That aint a hard and fast or guarantteed way of getting a big kick when the turbo spins up.
You should fin that with the standard setup, the turbo starts to spin up from around 2000 revs and kicks in around the 3000 mark.
Yes you should feel a kick, but it's more like a smooth push to start then speeds up.
What Boost figures are you getting on the gauge?? How far do you take the car up the rev range?? take it to the limiter. If your spark leads and rotor arm are ok, check the spark plug gap. Also check the vaccum pipework from the wastegate and too and from the amal valve, are these on the right way round?
My astra sounds like a NA car when i boot it but you can hear the turbo spinning up as i have an induction kit on it which also makes the wastegate actuator audiable without fitting an after market dump valve.
Don't forget you loose quite a bit of bhp throught your drive train. an example would be my friends cav turbo. This car is putting out roughly 278 bhp and 305lb/ft at the crank (rr'd) and it was calculated it lost something like 70bhp throught the drive train!!! mine looses approx 30bhp.
If you've checked over everything and it's all functioning as it should do, then don't worry, fit a phase III kit from wallace performance. You will get a kick then, 300bhp
I have been out for a spin in the car. I held the revs at about 3500/4000 for a few seconds and then floored it and ....
I'm still not totally convinced but i haven't changed the spark plugs yet. Do you recommend any? I usually use bosch Super 4's. What gap do i need?
This may sound weird but which are the pipes to the amal valve etc..? I assume there the ones to the left of the turbo. how do i know which way they should be? I'm thinking of getting a phase 1 kit next week. That should be 260 at the crank and about 200 at the wheels shouldn't it? Do you know what the torque figure is on the Phase 1 kit?
As far as the plugs go mate, go get some from your local freindly VX dealer . Only £2.41 and guarenteed to work ok(had some NGKs in mine and it didn't like them)
Also finally getting some where with the boosting we talked about a while back. After chatting to RDS and Rob Fairbrother, we decided to get my guage connected up, getting boost proper now, and feels so much better than before. But also showed me that the actuator is not holding boost properly(still getting that same prob as before on the wales thrash) so gonna order one soon(not sure where I'm going to get it yet though) and get it fixed.
As for the your other thing, well I've never had a prob with a Saxo Been out for a thrash today with Tom stickland, animal and a few others today, not a lot in it on the road like that. Showed when I have trouble getting a certain red Mk2 8v GTE out my mirrors!!
heeee heeee saxo's, i had a go with one - booted it to 60 in second, he did quite well despite him having the advantage on me - i didnt boot it till he was level so he had the chance but failed. then i hit the stoppers (uprated ones lol) and the saxo hit his anchors and the car skidded side to side (with the look on his face like he laid a turd there and then), needless to say he turned off at the next junction to avoid another embarrasing mess, gotta say tho it IS how you drive the car too - you could have all the power in the world but you gotta be able to know how to push it to the limit
Richie, i know that thers a lad in a near by village with a cav turbo and my girlfriends step brother knows him so i might see if we can have ago in eah others car. I think it might just be me expecting to much. I think the actuator may need changing cos the boost fluctuates a bit after overboost. It runs as you have siad pretty much so maybe its just in need of a few bits replacing to get it back to tip top condition.
hmmm just a thought. if i buy the phase 1 kit and then want the phase 2 kit do i need to buy the while kit or will the chip be the same? Do i just add a bigger intercooler at a later date?
I think Richie is right, your actuator mnay need replacing.
I had a similar thing with mine but what happend was that the turbo would overboost and then cut back straight away to no boost.
I had a chat with Gav at Wallace performance and also Russ (mad Cally guy) and after fitting an uprated actuator (supplied by Gav), removing the modded airbox pipe that was restricting air rather than directing more in, oh and replacing the broken vacum hose the car ran better than ever.
As for getting beaten by a Saxo VTS, I had a race with one only last night and believe me he didn't know what had happend! Left him standing coming off 2 roundabouts. I thought he got the message coming off the first one, but when he came back for more I had to show hom the Cav Turbo power lmao lmao lmao .
Ok Things are looking up. i had a race with a Lotus Exige today and although i lost. It was pretty close. Aren't they supposed to be really quick? We were on a dual carriageway so we were at speeds between 55 and 110. He pulled away but only slightly and then i started to gain on him slightly. His exhuast was throwing soom very nice flames!!!!
