I'm getting a nasty ticking noise at idle, which gets better as the revs increase.
Doing a search through the forums and a few PM's with Gary, it seems like the horrible ticking noise on my ecotec Cav Sri is indeed coming the exhaust manifold.
Looking at the exhaust manifold, one of the studs (bottom left by Stat) is MISSING.
Went to Vx and they reckon the studs shearing off is a common problem with the ecotec blocks and they'd want £318 to strip-off the manifold, drill the duff stud and sort it out.
Thing is, I cant see down the hole to see if the stud has cracked off or simply come out. So before doing anything else, I bought a couple of new studs & nuts and tried to screw a new one into the hole, keeping my fingers crossed it went in. Well unbelievably, it DID screw in a bit (finger tight), so I'm reasonably happy the original stud has come out - or at least there's enough thread in there to be serviceable.
HOWEVER, when I put this new stud in, and tighten it right up - do you think the ticking will go. I'm really hoping so. I really don't want to have to remove the whole exhaust manifold to replace the gasket, unless it's ABSOLUTELY necessary. I understand it's a C<>t of a job to do, and of course it needs all of the most heat-corroded & stiff nuts on a car to come off, etc... I can just see the hassle now...!!!
I could do with anyone's advice about this. How lucky will I be with just putting the stud in and tightening the nut? Anyone else had this prob? Any tips if the manifold has to come off?
