Same on the F20, and the F16 MK1 GTE box. In reality, most of them leak so fast, they get the cheapest! 80W90. I can't tell the difference to be honest, although the way I treat my 80-quid F20 is generally without mercy, so I am in the happy position of not really giving a shat Glad I don't have an F28 sometimes
Gearbox builder once told me you can even use engine oil if it's an emergency, some oil being better than no oil whatsoever - 'tis true an' all. Thought I'd take it one step further and recycle my own waste - I must confess to being so God damn skint recently I've been chucking used engine oil at my infamous "F20 half-gasket lightweight spec" gearbox, and it's still got five forward gears and one reverse. Doesn't sound odd particularly. Could be the gearbox casing, half full of swarf and bits of valve from the engine oil, damping the noise from within, but ignorance, lest we should forget, is bliss.
engine oil is definately a no-no.
If you're left in the desert with an empty gearbox and you only have a litre of engine oil, then you obviously go for that - but otherwise you don't want engine oil in the gearbox.
Of course John, I'm not recommending it in any way! I'm just saying that the gearbox survived
It's also a solution to having to go down the tip with all that bloody oil. It's a dirty, thankless task (unless you're one of these exit-holes who chucks it down the drain). And my F20 deserves it. Take that! 240lb/ft and Texas crude with bits in it. Slag
Of course John, I'm not recommending it in any way! ...
about a year ago, we had a joker "professional" on ClubCalibra. He called himself "box doctor" and did gearbox recons for a living.
One of his recommendations was that people should use engine oil in the F28 - despite the flak from the 'do-gooders', the moderators cornered him with probing questions and he went back where he came from.
<was he trying to create work for himself, or was he simply a plonker? who knows...>
How very strange! I am not he, if that's what you're thinking. I'm from Manchester, like pies, am not under the mistaken impression that engine oil is the lubricant of choice for gearboxes worth more than my car's book value, and I am so belt-tighteningly eye-bulgingly funds-must-come-through-or-I-may-have-an-aneurism, Satan's own cash-flow problem, broke as a joke MUTHA-skint downright destitute - I would take a **** on someone's MUM on the INTERNET for a QUID.
I can't afford an a F28. I suppose if it was a while ago, I could be him "having lost everything trying to scrounge an F28 to start up again", but I just don't want an F28 LOL lmao 7kg extra fat
Wait til you experience being sorely tempted to nick a litre of sludge from the sump of a semi-abandoned Cavalier so your gearbox doesn't run dry somewhere in France on the way back from the Nurburgring - suddenly you're glad of anything!
Yeah but it's stretchy stuff oil innit. Polymers. Boingy boingy. It's either 75-90 or 80-90, and clearly they both do 80 and more besides, and the recommended oil can't be both of them, can it?
