Right this frontera ive salvaged has now flumocks'ed several people.. Ive had it on the road for a while now and clocked up nigh on a thousand miles since putting the new head on it.. BUT she sounds like a bag of crap but drives loverly, there isnt any loss of power or ANY smoke.
The engine is VERY tappity but here are a few points to note before a prognosis is made:
1. Its got a brand new set of lifters and reconned head.
2. The frontera has an integral oil pressure gauge, the oil pressure never goes anywhere near the red at idle and is up at half or over when driving (depending how hot the engine is)
3. The ticking is WORSE at idle and low revs (around 2.5k) but disapears when the engine is revs, if it is reved to the red line it sounds perfect.
4. Its got a new timing chain tensioner.. (didnt replace chain or guides though) although the sound doesnt really sound like a chain?
So far ive been told the problem could be:
a) Shells: BUT the noise disapears at speed but you'ed expect it to get MUCH worse as the engine is reved.
b) Big end: Oil pressure is fine and theres no knocking..
c) Little ends: this was my thought but I'd expect it to get worse with revs?
d) Timing chain: not sure about this one lol
e) Oil Pump: I was told there could be too much "play" in the oil pump, but wouldnt that effect the pressure?
Has anyone got any ideas? cheers for any advice
