well that me had my car back a week and i didn't want to write too much before i had truly driven it and i'm glad i didn't because my opinions have since changed....
When the car came back i felt like it was a little quicker and a little bit more torque-ay and that it was underfuelling.
After having it back a week i think differently.
I thought within a week i would be bored. This is not the case.
of course this isn't like comparing a standard 1.4 16V to a standard 1.6 16V engine, as my 1.4 was on the verge of death and had 85K miles on it, and the 1.6 has been modded with the exhaust and intake before i ever drove it and has only 20K miles on it
The car had a lot more overtaking ability and much quicker through the gears without a thrashing. I ripped a MK3 golf tonight not sure what one it was but what matters is how easy it was i wasn't really pushing the car that hard i just purred past him in 3rd at about 5K rpm and i could hear his car screaming lol!
I love the torque differance its so much more drivable.
I also think i has discovered a little cool mod for the 1.6 engine. When i was transferring the intake and exhausts over i noticed that the 1.4 and 1.6 has the same exhaust ports and since i was keeping my stainless system i only needed a manifold i took the manifold off the 1.4 and was going to keep the manifold on the 1.6 as i thought it would fit, however once i took a look at it i noticed that the 1.6 engine had a pre-cat in the manifold, i asked a mate and he said the 1.6 astra's all have em, as well as a main cat. I was like no chance and kept the manifold off the 1.4 they both had the same bore but the 1.6 manifold was 4 - precat - 2 - 1. The 1.4's was 4-2-1.
Its also an SXi it came out of but i don't think the SXi engine is faster than any other one.
Whats better about this is not many people espicially around here would change a manifold. Most change a backbox, the rare few will get a system, maybe one or two without cats. I've got the lot
I ran into a mate the other night and he's got an SXi so i had a look under his bonnet and sure enough he has a pre-cat. I've heard the pre-cats are VERY restrictive and i'm sitting thinking this would perhaps explain why the no pre-cat 1.4 has 90hp and the pre-catted 1.6 only has 100.
So myself and my mate put it to the test his car is totally standard trim only a year old.
Took em out and promptly left him for dead!
To be honest neither of us could believe it!, no comparison i think i could keep with a 1.8 based on his cars performance.
My car has no cat(s) and 2.5 inch bore stainless system and an induction kit, both engines have about 20K miles on them, not even close!
Could it be that just the stuff i've done has made that much of a differance, are pre-cats that bad?
Also i still don't think its fuelling that well at the moment, maybe its just running a little leaner than stock and giving me more power
Anyways next steps engine wise are going to be EGR off, powerbox or torq tube and unichip - i hope by then i'll be safe to claim 110hp at the flywheel?
ind kit (piperx)
stainless exhaust system
both cats removed
sort of 4 branch manifold
safe to say from all that i could expect 10hp?!
