I found that I couldn't get a good enough angle on the pas for the belt to turn it enough to make it work.
By Axels I presume you mean driveshafts. I used Astra GTE ones at first on the Tigra but found the shorter one to be just a little too long. I ended up using a PVD driveshaft which is specially designed to be the right length.
I used the longer GTE driveshaft yes, that was fine. The shorter GTE driveshaft was less than an inch too long, so the difference is very small. But it was enough to make the gear box lift up at a certain point when the wheel turned.
I didn't try the belt in the engine bay, as I gave up before putting the engine in the car. With the engine sat on the ground, there was not enough surface contact on the power steering pulley to make it drive the pump properly.
