had a powder coated cambelt cover from miles to switch over today, so set to it with a buddy.
the original one was on tight and sitted fine. top two bolts came out of the cover fine, no probs.
was reluctant to take the alternator belt off at first, so struggled around for a while trying to get the bottom bolt out. when it did come out, it unwound the peg from the head that the cover securing bolt screws into. still, no probs we got the bolt seperate from the stud/peg/mount and bolted it back to the engine.
the gasket seemed fine so it was switched onto the new cover and we proceeded to refit it. at this point it was obvious that the alternator belt had to come off or we'd never get the new cover on.
belt off, cover on, we start screwing in the bolts. get them tight, but the bolt tightens to the peg before it clamps the cover down onto the back plate.
it's the same for each bolt. they are tight, but the cover still rattles about with around a quarter inch of play.
we re-tried it with the original, which was exactly the same. using the same gasket that was absolutely fine before we removed anything.
this is confusing me no end, and after much mincing and head scratching, i'm flumoxed and have given up.
is anyone able to shed some light on what we've done wrong?
same gasket, same bolts, gone back on the same as the old one came off, yet it's so far from being right that it hurts.
any help or suggestions gratefully received.
