The Cam belt snapped today or so I think! I was driving along and it cut out the ignition light didn't come on just lost all drive and power the engine management light came on thought when it cut out. I was doing around 50mph at the time. The cam belt looks all intact from the top but when you turn the engine over the cam doesn't move and the engine turns over slower than normal!! It's a 2.0 8v on a 93 astra Sri ( k reg ). The bloke down the garage told me they somtimes have a fail safe on these engines and they just break the rockers!!! Has anyone had a similar problem? What sort of damage could I exspect? Any help or advise would be great!
the 8 valve engines are free wheeling so the pistons shouldnt touch the valves, so i doubt theres any damage, my dads 1.6 8 valve cam belt snapped last week because the water pump seized, new pump and new belt and not a problem
The belt shredded the teeth and the belt has only done 7k and the water pump changed then on the 24/07/03. The water pump and all pullys are free and not seized, every thing looks a ok now and the engine sounds sweet. I must admit it's worring why it shredded as the car wasn't under load when it failed??? Possible it was a faulty belt!! I put a genuine Vauxhall belt on now so I hope it will be ok!! Glad it wasn't 16v Cheers!
