Driving at a constant speed of 70mph down a motorway, then all of a sudden the car just loses power. I press the accelerator a few times (about 10 to be precise) and the car seems to come back to life. Then about 30 secs later if i keep the accelerator at the same place the same will happen. However if i put my foot down this does not happen. This only seems to be happening when i am not moving the accelerator pedal. Twice now the car has not come back in and i have had to pull over. The Engine starts straight back up but once i get back up to the speed i was doing and hold it there, it does it again. Just put a new Fuel Pump Relay in and this has not helped. The spark plugs are a light brown. Any help on this would be most grateful.
I have heard from other boards that this could be a catalytic convertor problem, then it could be the distributor. There are so many things it could be. Has anyone had this problem and if so how was it fixed?
just to add things, The car starts straight away everytime and it does not cut out at traffic lights or islands like a lot of people's do. It is only when i am travelling at a constant speed of above 60pmh.
How do you mean you changed them with spade connectors? What are spade connectors? I am new to this sort of thing as this is my 1st car. Where will i find the coil connector? Is this oart fo the HT lead that inserts onto the spark plug?
the coil is a black thing behind the battery which has a coil lead coming off the distributor cap to it and below the coil lead is the wiring plug with a black wire and green wire on it this is what you need to check
Have you got an aftermarket air filter fitted? I.E K+N etc. I ask this because I have a mate who had exactly the same problem and it turned out to be icing of the injection unit/air intake at speeds above 60mph. You would have exoected it to happen in the winter only but this was during the summer. It is a long shot but worth checking to eliminate.
the air filter says clean filters on it with a number, cant remember the number. To the coil, took the leads off, seem pretty much ok, little biut of white on the connectors, not enough to bother it though, the little black thing with the wires going into buzzes a little bit when the engine is running, is this supposed to happen?
