Im re-building my C20 XE engine out of a cav GSi, to go into my Nova 1.0 Animal.
I hope to build the engine to a spec that will be reliable and ok for later power modifications.
To start, i am unsure of the milage the engine has covered as the original cav GSi engine was changed before i had it. I bought the cav with a suspect head gasket problem. The whole cooling system was full of sludge (water mixed with oil). Now, the head isn't a CosCast which made me think - Porus Head, BUT, this head looks very new indeed. It hasnt discoloured and gone ****ty looking as they do after a while! It seems as though the car has recently had a head gasket job done, but its been bodged. None of the breather pipes had been refiitted correctly, not head bolts were as tight as they should be, no airbox re fitted and no cam cover refitted. This didnt put me off that much due to the price, the fact that the car ran nicley, the gearbox casing seemed pretty new and things like the battery, altenator was also pretty new. When i took the car home, i cleaned the whole coolant system out twice, and with new water in, the car seemed to run at around 90 on the gauge, which leads me to believe the head gasket job was so bodged that they didnt even bother cleaning the system out!
Any way, since, i have stripped the head off, cleaned it all through with degreaser and a steam cleaner. I have pics of the head at home and fair play it looks like brand new too. With the head, i have decided to change all valve stem oil seals, thermostat (82 degree), new set of gaskets, and considering getting ported and polished.
With the bottom end, i would like to build it to a solid spec, but retaining std pistons, rods and crank. I thought to change all bearings and seals, new rings, Stronger bolts (ARP), Lighten the flywheel and then balance the bottom end up, and maybe a re hone? Headgasket wise i was thinking of trying the Z20LET idea, recommended?
Basically i would like any thought and ideas, and also some advice on what to change/modify to get a nice running xe that will take future power mods (no more than 200bhp) without needing any major re work. Also it would be nice to get the engine in without having to worry about it starting to knock its bollax off 2months down the line!
Along with the above, i am obviously going to fit new gm timing belt and rollers, water pump, all sump and crank gaskets/seals, plugs and leads, Oil and Filter, Fuel Filter and get the injectors cleaned.
