general rule of thumb is blue smoke on acceleration is piston rings, blue smoke on rundown in gear is valve stem oil seals. There is a chance oil breathers could pass oil through, but it wouldnt be excessive amounts of blue smoke.
smoking during a cold start could be the coolant temp sensor - when they go they can cause overfuelling & bore wash - nice blue smokescreen that clears after a couple minutes as the engine warms a little.
cheers for your reply you see the problem is that when it starts form cold it is fine does not smoke but after about five minutes it will start burning oil , now I would have thought it was more likely to smoke from cold do you think it would be worth doing the valve seals and a compression test or should i be looking else where????????
Do as many 'tests' as you can on the car since they are free. What colour is the smoke and if you drive the car until its warm leave it for a couple of hours and then come back, does it do the same when you turn the engine on?
the smoke is sort of grey ish and if you hang on a bit i will take it out for a drive to warm it up and leave it to cool down again thanks for your help i'm fairly clueless on the car at the moment it did'nt seem to smoke as much before i changed the oil but I think it was normal multigrade oil instead of the semi i put in (10 40w)
I have now tried the test you sugested and run the car at idle for about 10 min till it started smoking then turned it off left it for about an hour and a half strated it again and as before nothing for about 5-10 mins then smoke although i did notice that the tempreture gauge was only reading one blue line after 10 mins at idle ?????
first things first the engine has done 140 k and apart from oil burning and a noisy tappet it seems fine and i do have a lot of history with the car and it has been serviced regular ish by our local lex auto care i've only had it about a month and a far as i know the head has never been off but i was planing to remove it any way as soon as i find someone capable (and cheap)for a rebuild
