Well i was out tonight just driving about, and as i was driving through the town i put my window down.
While sitting in traffic i could hear a loud clunking sort of like a diesel engine, but deeper and more off beat, sort of metalic tick clunk - quite a weird noise!
Anyways i stopped the car and had a listen, oh that sounds NOT healthy, lucky my mate that knows engines much better than me was out, i went to where he was parked and asked him to have a quick look, another of our mates was also with him, hes a mechanic by trade so they both had a look. I knew it was a bad thing, but they could tell me which bad thing it was!
Anyways first words they both said were "not good", "its coming from the internals" & "bad news"
It appears my little 1.4 16V engine is not long for this world!
My mate wasn't too sure on the exact noise, i took a stab at piston slap and he said maybe. The other fellow said its either piston slap or cams getting ready to jump out! - however both agreed that its going to rapidly die if driven any longer!
So thats me had it with this engine, its so clear the last a.s.s of an owner hasn't maintained it!, its needed a new DIS module, head gasket, exhaust, it had just missed its timing service when i bought it bla bla bla, i tried my best but alas its screwed!
I'm severly unhappy, i've now been heavily researching this XEV conversion that i was hoping to do in just a few months when i had the cash but thats it, screwed-the-pooch shall we say.
I'm not investing another penny of my money in this engine its coming out NOW!
I also am not putting another 1.4 in it, no way, no how!
So for ease, and money wise, i'm going to put a 1.6 16V in it, that way i don't have to worry about too many complications!
I now really need to know the ins and outs of this swap, but "don't bother" and "stick a redtop in it" are not allowed because i don't have the resources available at the moment to do that!
OK here's the down, i can get access to a good size lockup and all the tools required to do the swap. I've decided i'm doing it, garages will only screw up my paint job if i leave the car with them! I have never performed an engine swap before but i've helped, in fact just last night we dropped the engine out of the cav turbo for the project vectra turbo -- i've got photos i'll update my page soon guys!
There are a few main things i don't yet know my way around, but i, at this point, will really REALLY appreciate any help mig can offer, because i'm seriously messed up about this!
Firstly i've looked through the haynes manual and according to the manual the 1.6 used an F17 gearbox, and the 1.4 uses either an F13 or F17 - any ideas which mine is, i'll go out and have a look and see if i can find a marking tomorrow morning.
Second problem, if i split the engine from the gearbox, and hoist the engine out, will the 1.6 engine fit in, in its place?. I'm refering back to these engines being identical on the outside so will it fit?
Third problem, how do i get round the immobiliser?, as i'll have to use the 1.6's ECU for the job?
What do i need for the swap, according to some sources there's not a lot in it. So do i only need the engine and ECU?
Will i need the wiring loom? based on looking at my mates SXi i shouldn't. But i really need to be sure lol!
Will my suspension be ok as is?, what about my brakes?
How much should i be expecting to pay for a 1.6 16V engine and ECU from a scrap yard?
I'm trying to get a cost estimate and parts estimate so i can start buying parts for the swap next week. So here's my part list and costs...
Engine & ECU - Cost : ???
Gearbox Gasket - Cost: ???
Get Vauxhall to recode ECU for immobiliser - Cost: ???
Please add parts i havn't thought of that i'll need i would like get this done without having to run out for parts !
Thanks for any help offered guys - I'm really annoyed and a bit upset about the whole thing after the time and money i've poured into this car, i've turned it from a wreck into, what i consider, practically a show car - the engine is the only part i didn't change, bloddy figures!
