Hi, my astra gsi is drinking oil at too hefty a rate for my liking these days, and I'm fairly sure the compression is also down (not been tested though) as the accelleration isn't as brisk as it ought to be, and the last dyno test showed it was pumping 137 bhp instead of 150.
It's done nigh on 150k miles.
As such, I'm considering whether to get a recon unit, or rebuild the one I've got. I don't want to go spending much more than about £500, and I don't really want to buy a 2nd hand unit as you can't be sure what condition its like (& I'm no mechanic).
So.... I'm thinking as it seems to be compression related, is it possible to change the piston rings and stem seals (and such like) fairly cheaply, or is a full rebuild necessary? Should I get oil pump / water pump etc done at the same time? What sort of costs should I be budgeting for this?
Also what sort of costs would I be looking at, and how much generally does a recon unit go for - any recommendations of where to get one from? Preferably a coscast (or porosity cured) version?
