just been reading retro cars (a good read actually). and they showed how to convert your macperson strut to coilover suspension. Only cost thirty quid each side. they used a locking spring collar which you welded onto the strut. was just wondering if you did this to a mk2 16v astra would it be safe coz its dam cheap is that.
It's perfectly safe provided the welding is done properly. On the Astra even if the welds fail the sleeve can only slide down as far as the steering arm so the suspension won't completely collapse.
I haven't seen the magazine article but they may be talking about using universal a conversion kit designed for 2.25" ID springs but these won't fit over the Astra struts. TAS sell a kit specifically for the Astra which uses 2.5" ID springs for about £45 a side. By the time you add in springs, angle grinder discs, welding etc it will end up costing around £200.
