in the wing of later cavs is the carbon canister thingy, also thing it was fitted to astras too, now i no longer need this, but theres a few wires that go into the wing that come from the bulkhead the go to the passenger side of the car, i want to get rid of this as the wirng for it looks untidy, can i just take it out completely?? i think theres a pipe that from to the fuel tank and this goes to the canister then should go back to the inlet.
I binned all this on my Astra, not for weight saving but to get rid of a couple more hoses, especially around the vent valve on the inlet manifold.
I chopped the breather pipe that goes from the fuel tank quite low, where the fuel feed/return comes up from underneath the car. Then, I put the small 'rubber cone type breather thing' (technical description) from one of the now-redundant pipes, over the top of it.
It does the job perfectly, I don't get any fuel smells.

If yours never had the pipe (ie left the factory without a CAT) then it will have a normal vent for the tank.
If the car had the pipe & canister (left factory with a CAT) then the tank will not have a vent as that is what the pipe is for. If you block it, it will create a vacume in the tank and after a while the pump will not be able to pump the fuel down.
