mix and match engine 4 me nova
rite here goes...
project nova glf is coming along nicely since i bought it 11mnths ago
there are a couple of what are believed ot be a nova first on it.
now im starting to look into the engine side of things now
its still a 1.0 4spd at the moment. the engine is really mint and i will drive on that untill i find something else no problem. threrefore there aint no hurry.
now then, my friend has a 1.6 gte nova lump doing absolutely nothing.
and i have 3 small block xe heads which need some machining
what ive always wanted was a 1.6 16v pre ecotec gsi corsa lump for the nova.
can i use the gte bottom end, get it rebuilt, balanced and lighten the flywheel, then use one of the corsa heads that ive got?
i'd also need cams and followers bcos the heads are bare, so id look into some mild cams while im there.
i cant really be arsed with the injection so i would run it on twin 40's perhaps.
this would save me a hell of a lot, as i can use things that are readily available to me.
your help and advice is mucho appreciated

found a full set of followers today as well for the head
any idea if the timing belt will also be a problem?
as far as i'm aware the 1.6 gte block IS the 16v block.
thats what i had heard some time ago
are the pistons the same too?
also there aint a hole on the gte/gsi for a nock sensor, is that correct?
The pistons are different as they have valve cut outs on the 4 edges. if you are going down the twin 40's you need an ignition only ecu for the DIS pack, the std DIS pack needs modding to work else a DIS pack off the ecotec vectra (siemens type)
If you look on motorsportdirect.co.uk Iain has had a carb manifold for on of these engines for ages now and it's at a good price too
Bar that you can use the block. they are identical bar piston cut outs.
New cam belt and you'll be sorted.
You should expect 140BHP (closed cell dyno) from the set up, SBD do one like that with 45's on, but I think 40's would be better for throttle response. Good luck
do u know if i could get the gte pistons machined to work?
so i take it they will bolt together no problem, same gaskets etc?
elgan stop polishin ur corsa C and get on EPC in the garage.
Just looking at the pics the blocks are the same.
TIS shows the blocks to be very similar
Are the 3 heads from cambelt failures?
Ull need to block off the EGR cut outs in the inlet manifold, maybe weld a plate on there, if theyre X16XE heads.
Get the block overbored 0.5mm and use standard GM 1.6 16v 0.5mm overbored pistons or some omegas if uve saved enough.
im stil linvestigating the whole thing at the moment.
the ignition sounds tricky, the mechanical side isnt too complicated.
just need to price what i will need up and compare everything in relation to just buying a 1.6 16v lump from a corsa with all the running gear now.
Cost wise, engine and everything is abotu the 400 mark
and only making 100BHP
if you built you own then depending on cost of carbs around the £1000 mark but making healthy power
to run carbs on a 1.6 16v head ull need MBE/DTA management, good few hundred quid there.
Try http://www.rallyusedparts.co.uk if theres any second hand bits knockin about.
And youll need a fuel pump since ur 1.0 runs off the belt aside the engine, so theres £60-80 there.
U could go for 45s if u 16v it. to have more midrange and top end power but lack a touch of throttle response.
