| Noisy Processor? My processor fan is REALLY noisy, its always been quite loud but its getting near unbearable now. Am i right in thinking that if i can cool it better the fan will slow down?

| Re: Noisy Processor? Noisy heatsink fans are a common problem in the HP Compaq d530 PCs that we have at work.
What we usually find is that the heatsink & fan that is used on these processors seems to attract stupid amounts of dust. The usually all attract a little bit, but these attract stupid amounts. We usually take off the heatsink and fan, and take to it with a can of compressed air. Quite often we find a litteral carpet of dust between the heatsink and processor. After giving it a good clean with the air duster, we put it back on and it runs like a dream after that. It also helps with the speed, as now that the processor can be cooled more efficiently, the processor can do a bit more work.
Give it a try! |

Give it a try! | Just removed the processor heatsink/fan assembly and will give it a clean, i have a small hoover and some canned air here somewhere. Will see hif that improves anything. |

I have a RAM question too, only have 1GB at the min but want to upgrade to 2GB (2x1GB sticks), just ran a check on Crucial.com and the scanner says:
"According to our scan, your system already has the maximum amount of memory installed"
How can i double check if thats right, because i want 2GB |

| Re: Noisy Processor? Just read it again in more detail and in the actual scan it says:
Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB
Currently Installed Memory: 1GB
Available Memory Slots: 1
Number of Banks: 2
Dual Channel Support: No
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.40GHz Model 6, Stepping 4
CPU Speed: 3400 MHz
So that makes it look like i can run 2GB |

Also need a bit more info on the memory speed, theres ddr and ddr2, neither are interchangeable
Will be something like pc3200 |

Failing that download CPUZ, click the memory tab and it will tell you the speed is and double what it tells you (Double Data Rate) DDR400 is really 200MHZ doubled. ( this wont tell you the maximum it can take, just whats currently installed)
Then just find suitable sticks. |

| Re: Noisy Processor? Motherboard has:
DDR 400mhz
DDR2 533 mhz
And CPU-Z says:
DRAM freq = 200mhz
Max Bandwidth 200mhz
So i'd be safe getting 2x 1GB PC3200 @ 400mhz DDR2? |

If cpuz says 400 then yes 400mhz it is. |

If cpuz says 400 then yes 400mhz it is. | Surprisingly, I've seen motherboards with four banks. Two DDR and two DDR2. You couldn't use them both at the same time, but you could have either two sticks of DDR2... or two sticks of DDR. If you put it a stick of DDR and a stick of DDR2 at the same time it would scream and commit suicide though. |

If your fan has four wires then it will throttle itself depending on temperature (as a general rule). If it has three then it will be running at top speed all the time, unless the motherboard can modulate the 12v line.
But yeah, you've cleaned it out, which would have been my first suggestion. Cool.

We've just got shut of all our old stuff (including D530s), and they were all absolutely fine. The only machines we do have problems with are the stupid Dell machines. |
