| The max you are allowed in the front windows is 30% (this is combined with any standard tint), any more than that they can issue a VDN, the rest (windscreen excluded) can be limo black.
There is some debate though on what way the test meter should be used, as the Police tend to use it from the outside in, rather than inside out (the important factor), this to me suggests the reason given for the law is not what the law was actually introduced for.
Whilst I agree that heavily tinted windows are very dificult to see through at night, so therefore are dangerous (try this with apair of sunglasses at night).
I think the law is more to do with being able to identify a driver from the outside more than it is to do with the driver's vision.

| Surely it will block out the same amount of light regardless of which way the equipment is used?

| You would think that would be the case, but the test unit reads the light through the window, and it is obviously a lot darker in the car, so the light intensity is therefore much lower.
It is basically just a light meter. |

thats why its done fromthe out side in, bike lights arnt that bright...
So they do the test from the out side in so it show up how my light is let thru the tint to see what you can see.

| TBH I had tints in the front and
a: At night any knob head in the road that got hit was their fault as we have pavments.
b: Its dark so everyone had lights on - therefore i could see them
c: If it got too dark I would open the window --- simple science.
Yes I admit it was a nightmare reversing into a dark driveway and waitging for the crunch to happen but it wass one of those things. They looks good and helped me during the hot months!
I will only be happy when the FUZZ pull limo's aswell. Why is it one rule for one and another for us 'commoners ! |

B. Drivers have trouble seeing cyclists in broad daylight, so saying they've got lights, therefore they're easy to see is complete tosh.
C. In that case, why bother having glass windows at all? We could all have aluminium windows! Far lighter, cheaper to manufacture, and if you need to see, you just open it! Genius! |

It is basically just a light meter. |
The meters I've seen used, have a light source one side and a meter the other, and fit close to the glass. (Wonder if they can accomodate, S-Class double glazing?)
So the ambient light is irrelevant.

| That would make sense to test it that way, as it would be accurate, but that is not what they all use. |
